Book 16 Chapter 3 of Tom Jones.
This is part of an ongoing project in which I will record and post one chapter per week of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones over the course of four years.
In this chapter, we catch up with Sophia in her confinement. She receives a letter from Tom via Black George. Her reaction to the letter, however, remains unexplored. This chapter may contain a subtle dig at Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, where Fielding writes of self-starvation, "the sublimest grief, notwithstanding what some people may say to the contrary, will eat at last."
